How long is an opened jar of alfredo sauce good for?

I opened it a/b a month ago, and the expiration date says it's good for a couple of months... but do they mean it's good only when it's unopened until then?

That expiration date is meant for the unopened jar. Once open the jar has about 5-7 days and then it needs to be chucked. It isn't worth the risk of food poisoning, over a $3 jar of sauce.

Since alfredo sauce has dairy (the cream), I doubt it'll be good past one week once it's opened. Dump the contents and recycle the glass jar.

  • I wouldnt use it due to the ingrediants it has. Sometimes it can smell and or taste fine but isnt. Its not really worth the risk. Usually they mean its good till then unless opened then you have to reduce the time. I always go by half the days or even less.

Buy some more :) and chuck the old lot.

    sorry, that's an Ewwww !

7 days after opening, IF it was refrigerated, is probably all its really safe for -

expiration dates tell you "best by" or "use by" and both refer to the un-opened state.

Next time, use what you need and freeze the rest in an ice cube tray, then pop them out and keep frozen in a ziplock - you can take them out later, thaw in the microwave and use a little at a time.... yum, alfredo for one!

The expiration date is meant for an unopened package, yes. However, if it has been in the fridge, smell and/or taste it. If it seems fine, cook it thoroughly and use it.
