I've always thought about this if a girl rejects me what should I do?
Should I make a joke out of it like ask her to wait a few seconds and ask her again as a joke, or just leave it as that?

just be like, "well, i tried!" and walk away

If you are rejected you should just leave it be. I try not to think "what if she rejects me" because that is just depressing. I think "even if she rejects me." Don't think "what if" but "even if." It isn't the end of the world.
