Why do snake show interest in sound of BEEN ?

It is well known that snakes don't have ears and they only smell the audio waves through air or ground vibrations.

snakes are also not so advanced species that they have an intelligent brain which could understand good or bad music, but even then i have personally seen that snake often come out of their holes when they hear sound of BEEN of speras. What make them to attract toward the sound of BEEN or it is just myth ? Why this phenomenon is present in India only or there are also such incidents occurred in other countries that snake are captured by playing BEEN by speras ?

Snakes don't have ears, but they can sense movement, whether it's a BEEN or a simple Stick. Snakes think that the BEEN is a weapon by which the snake charmer will attack on them. They move with the BEEN no matter it is playing sound or not.

They don't "smell" the vibrations but they do sense it far more accurately than we humans do. And what they are actually doing is not show interest in the music of the been (pungi) but actually respond to the movements that the charmer makes.. And when they spread their hoods it means that they are feeling threatened and its a sign to warn off predators meaning that they will strike.. And yes, different species of snakes have different ways of responding to a possible threat. Like rattle snakes in North America respond to it by making a rattling sound.. The same way indian cobras respond to those movements by spreading there hood and moving as the been does.

Well doing a little research on google i've learnt that they do respond to a been's music in a specific way but not just take a defensive position.. I cannot say for sure but i guess the vibrations of the been's sound picked up by a snake might be pleasant or unpleasant in its own way.. i'm looking forward on the development and conclusion of researches on this particular topic.. :)

    hope these help:

If snakes come out of their hiding places, it is probably the vibrations of people moving about that disturbs them. They move to the movement of the hands of the person playing the musical instrument.
