Any good recipes for homemade dog food?

I recently decided to try and make my dog's food because I don't like all the chemicals in the store bought stuff. They (I have 3) really liked the stuff I made last night, but I don't want to do the same all the time. I'll post my recipe and feel free to add yours. Mine's a lot like chicken salad, actually. Thanks!

-2 cups chicken breast, cubed

-2 Tbs. mayo

-1/8 cup chicken broth

-1 cup grapes, halved

-2 Tbsp. unsweetened chocolate

-2 Tbsp flour

Mix the flour, mayo, broth and chocolate into a sauce. Toss in the grapes and chicken. Toss it in their bowls! It sounds harder than it is. You can always make a big batch.

Okay, the unsweetened chocolate portion of your recipe is totally ridiculous. You love your canine companion, don't you? So why not treat him to a few bars of the fully sweetened stuff? Oh, and make sure you keep the cubed chicken at room temperature a few days before serving, so that it releases those essential enzymes that should be a part of every healthy dog's diet!

Please tell me that this "recipe" is a joke -- please? Because if you aren't kidding, you basically fed your dogs the equivalent of rat poison.

Chicken and turkey can contain a virus that doesn't harm humans but is dangerous for dogs. Grapes and raisins cause kidney damage in canines, and chocolate is poisonous to them.

I'm also going out on a limb here and guessing that you didn't check to see what a dog's nutritional requirements are. That mixture certainly doesn't contain the vitamins and nutrients that they need.

Oh, and BTW -- changing a dog's food frequently is the surest way to be cleaning up doggy diarrhea and puppy puke at odd hours of the day and night. You have to ease most of them into a new diet by blending small amounts of the new food into their old meals and increasing the new at each feeding until you've gradually switched them over.

There are plenty of good pre-made, healthy dog foods out there, but they're expensive. Royal Canan is an excellent brand. But if you insist on making your own, here is a good article with plenty of links to get you started:

One more thing: for the love of heaven, consult your vet before you take it upon yourself to change your dogs' food. The vet can give you pointers and explain your dogs' individual nutritional requirements. A teacup Chihuahua and a Great Dane don't and can't eat the same quantity and type of food for reasons that should be -- but apparently aren't -- obvious.

  • Cut out the mayo, the grapes (Why would you feed a carnivore grapes? They don't feed lions and wolves grapes at the zoo, I assure you), the flour, the chicken broth, and the chocolate.

That leaves you with chicken breast. But don't cube it, dogs have teeth perfectly designed for chewing their food and don't need your help. But chicken breast isn't a balanced diet so add in some heart, liver, gizzards, kidney, green tripe and the like. Add a little salmon oil for Omega 3 and 6 and tada. You'll be feeding your dog the healthiest homemade diet possible, a raw (aka uncooked because, dogs don't have thumbs, start fires, nor do they cook, nor are they evolved (as we are) to eat cooked meat) prey modeled diet!!!

Chocolate is toxic to dogs. Please do not give your poor doggy chocolate! Call your vet and ask him. My parents raised collies and would have had a heart attack to think anyone gave their dogs chocolate!

If you must prepare at home(just for an occasional treat) use brown rice, chicken ( take the bones out), carrots, omega three oils. Break a few eggs in there too. My mother would make this once a week for her kennel dogs who always had beautiful coats. Otherwise, it was a high quality dog food with ingredients like chicken first! Omega three oil is wonderful for their coat. Peace!

Sounds like a great recipe for humans, but NOT FOR DOGS.

    NO: Mayo

    NO: Grapes

    NO: Chocolate

    NO: Flour

Unless you want to spend a lot of time and $$$, at your vet........

FOUR OUT OF SIX OF YOUR INGREDIENTS ARE EITHER TOXIC OR UNHEALTHY FOR DOGS.

You SHOULD NOT be feeding your dogs grapes OR chocolate. A dog's digestive system cannot process either and these foods can be very toxic to your dog. Same thing with raisins and onions.

Are you an idiot? Even small children know that chocolate is poisonous to dogs!!! And grapes?? Wtf is wrong with you? Grapes cause kidney failure in some dogs!!! That is the worst "recipe" I could imagine! Maybe you could throw in some avocado & macadamia nuts? Make sure he doesn't see his next birthday? Throw in some strychnine & a couple packs of Trident gum just for good measure. Please do some research. And please don't try making your own dog food again, it is far beyond your capabilities! Hey, that's too expensive for me... you know all that canned people food that gets pushed to the back of the pantry shelves? Instant doggie food. If it's too watery, just add some oatmeal or rice... you don't want those dogs getting the runs. Yeah, chocolate makes a great sweetener! =)
