laptop without battery?

battery has failed on a recently purchased laptop (toshiba)replacement is covered by warenty.however it will take at least 2 weeks before i get the replacement battery in the post.is it safe to run the computer on the main power supply minus a battery(have an icon saying 'no battery detected' showing).advice please?

    yeah, it's safe. keep in mind that if you lose power, you are goig to lose your work just like you would a desktop, so you want to be careful about toting it around the room and going past the reach of the power cord.

    It's safe if you have some way to prevent the laptop from shutting down if the power goes out, just like with a PC. If you have a UPS backup batter, you should use it.

    Yes, you can run the laptop on main power only. But, if you lose power, anything you have not saved will be lost, and the system will not shut down cleanly (always a risk with any operating system).

    If you're willing to take that risk, computer away.

    I can't say 100% sure in your case as I don't know your specific laptop, but I know I've used my IBM thinkpad without the battery with no problem.

    It'll be fine. The missing battery icon is there so you don't forget, unplug your computer, and lose your data. :)
