Acrylic has a distinct advantage - the thinner and cleanup solvent is - water!

Paints that have hydrocarbon-based solvents - thinners like methyl alcohol, lacquer thinner, and turpentine - are potentially hazardous - particularly in confined spaces. For this reason alone, a water-based paint is best. Sometimes you may find the paint hard to stick on plastic. If that is the case, wash the plastic parts in warm (not hot) water with a little dish detergent. The plastic parts are molded and some manufacturers do nothing to remove the mold release chemical which makes it easier to get it out of the mold, but harder to make the paint stick.

With wood models, it usually wise to paint the wood with a sealer before painting with a water-based paint. This is to prevent warping (bending) of the wood because of the water.
