Why do so many people fail to understand that those big long fluorescent tubes that have been used in offices and schools for decades contain significantly more mercury than the compact fluorescent bulbs?
People are just trying to demonize CFL's because they are "green". The mercury within them is minuscule, and the coal saved over their lifetime ends up resulting in much less mercury being emitted into the atmosphere.
You should still recycle them if you can, but honestly they're not the toxic grenades that everyone makes them out to be.

Most electricity comes from burning coal, and all types of coal have mercury in it. Because regular light bulbs burn more energy than fluorescent bulbs, the amount of mercury being released into the air from regular light bulbs is much more than the tiny amount of mercury in fluorescent bulbs.
Not only is the switch going to save electricity, but the amount of mercury being emitted into the environment will be less
