I am in need of some help with my laptop! Thank you!?

Ok would someone please go into depth on how to delete a hard drive and repartition the hard drive correctly? I would greatly appreciate this. Also if this is done incorrectly can you lose memory? Thanks!

Update:

So i deleted the partition and it says i have 57,232 mbs that are not partioned. How many gigabytes is this? And what is the best way to partition this drive?

Update 2:

Marty thank you for going into depth. I was wondering however do i need to do two partitions? Or just the one???

Update 3:

So i do not need a c and d drive? Thats what i was wondering!! And if i do need both drives how much do i put on each?

the easiest way to partition a hard drive if it is your primary hard drive, is simply to find your operation systems installation cd. put the cd/dvd in and reboot your laptop. while it boots up you should see a screen saying "press any key boot from cd/dvd..." do so and press any key within the 3-5 seconds it gives you. now, the operating systems setup should load and give you a main page. depending on the operating system your using, it may be a little different. basically you re-install the OS on the fresh partition. in the setup, you want to delete the partition and format the new partition. select the fast partition as it takes about 15 mins less time. when you make the partition, make sure you have the max size you can make it. now once its finished formatting it will copy all the re-installation files and reboot. dont press any keys until you see your windows begin to install. fill in all the appropriate info and congratz, your computer should be clean. notice you will need to download and reinstall alot of programs, update the OS and get anti virus protection. so dont rush into doing anything that may threaten your computer. oh, if it a secondary hard drive, go to your "My Computer" find the correct hard-drive, right click and select format. select the biggest size available, check quick format and then start. from there you should have either a clean OS installation or a fresh harddrive.

you only need 1 partition for your computer to function. unless you installed an additional hard drive, 1 partition is all you need.

That is around 57 gigs and I'm guessing you have a 60 gig hard drive.

All you need to do at this step is to create a new partition and choose the maximum allocated size possible which should be 57,232 mbs

once the partition is created choose to install the operating system on that newly created partition.

It's 55.89GB. Best way is to either use the built in Vista partition utility, or Gparted.

    Gparted: http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/windows-vista/using...

BE CAREFUL! Repartitioning your hard drive incorrectly could cause you to lose all you data!

Edit: Do you need both "C" and "D" partitions? That depends on what you are trying to do. If you're just reinstalling windows from scratch, you only need one partition. (In general, though, I recommend making 2 - one for the OS, and one for your stuff, so that if the OS gets messed up, your stuff has a lower chance of getting messed up as well. In which case, I'd give 20GB to the OS, and the rest to your data. And don't forget to back it up!)
