The dog has been designated as "Man's best friend".

It is thought that dogs were originally developed to assist man in hunting and protection.

Although in modern society most dogs are kept by the average person for companionship, the dog still is the ultimate animal to assist man.

IE: service dogs for disabled, search and rescue, police dogs, war dogs, protection, dogs used in arctic travel, still for herding and protecting flocks and herds, hunting......as well as many "participating sports/competitions" with dogs; agility, obedience, rally, frisbee, flyball, etc etc

According to the humane society of the United States 74.8 million of americans own dogs as pets. There is approximately 307,293,000 people in the united states documented on September 2, 2009 by the United States population clock. Thats alot of people having alot of dogs! with this said its safe to say I'm not the only person siding with the dogs on this issue.
