is sour dough bread supposed to taste sour?
I just got a bag of sour dough bread at wal-mart & well it tastes like baking soda & kinda sour I think,
Is sour dough bread actually supposed to taste sour or is it just the name??, becuz im afraid to eat it

Yes, the sour taste of sourdough comes from the yeast gathered to make the mother or "starter". San Francisco is famous for the yeast that gets its flavor from many complex components including the sea-rich air. There is air-borne yeast everywhere, so no matter where you live you can make sourdough bread but if you make sourdough in Maryland it will taste different than sourdough you make in Florida or Michigan or Arizona.

It's supposed to be a little tangy. Sourdough is made with both yeast and a helper bacterium called Lactobacillus, which produced lactic acid. The lactic acid will give the bread a slighty sour, tangy taste.

Due to the fermenting process used in making it, it will be slightly sour or maybe it is bettrefreshingibe it as not sweet or having charcter flavour . It is refreshing to have somthing that tastes different and you get used to it pretty quickly.

Yes, its supposed to be sour. How sour depends on who makes it and the batch. I like it.

It's just a name, kinda like horseradish doesn't come from horses
