Bob Marley....overrated? underrated? What are your thoughts on his music?

Everyone knows who he is, but do you listen to his music?

i listen to him, and i think he deserves his reputation as one of the best ever. that being said, i also think of him as a "trap" artist (as opposed to a gateway artist). what i mean by that is like, take miles davis, you start listening to miles davis and you naturally start listening to all sorts of different jazz, he is a gateway artist in to the world of jazz. but if you take robert johnson, for whatever reason people listen to robert johnson and just stop and dont look further into pre-war blues, i think of him as being a trap artist in that way. for whatever reason people listen to Bob and they stop and dont get any deeper into reggae, and as a big fan of early reggae i dont like this aspect of his legacy. but you cant argue with the music. simply some of the best stuff ever recorded.

    Not overrated.

Musically, socially, in every way, he is great. Most importantly, the music is amazing. For anyone who actually sits down and listens to his music, I can't imagine that its possible to not be completely into it.

Also, awhile back, I was at a party and it was about 3 o'clock in the morning. Most everybody was pretty much in crashed out mode. Someone put on that Marley Greatest Hits CD. Next thing you know the party was going again. It was as if no one had been crashed out a little bit earlier. It was like we had to remember that we were crashed. Marley!

Yes I listen to Marley's music and many other Reggae greats as well such as Lucky Dube, Clint Eastwood, Gregory Isaacs, Mikey Dread, Jacob Miller and U-Roy. Even though I like Bob Marley I do think he's a tad overrated. Marley seems to get most of the recognition for Reggae while others greats like those I've listed have gotten virtually nil.

I grew up listening to reggae music, everyday of my childhood my mother would play Reggae to me so Bob Marley was among one of the most heard musicians. Now a days I don't listen to Reggae that much (only if my Ipod is on shuffle, but otherwise not really).

To be honest I think Bob Marley became very overrated with the launch of the Legend album, I mean EVERYONE knows that cd. Nobody takes notice of songs like "Easy Skanking", " Zimbabwe", "Magga Dog", "sun is shining" "Stop that Train""Small Axe".

    Bob Marley rules.

Everyone knows him for the songs on Legend which really only span a brief portion of his career. I swear half the songs on that album come from Exodus. Anyways, Legend is like all the happy nice songs and it totally leaves out the more militant stuff, the political stuff, the let's smoke weed stuff, and really fails to show the changes in his music from the late 60s through the early 80s.

not overrated. He IS reggae music. No artist defines his genre like Marley.

No, I don't listen to his music but he's on my list of the artists I definitely want to check out and still hasn't...

I don't think he's overrated though; he's a pretty good reggae artist from what i've heard.

    Yes.

    I love his music.

He is like the John Lennon of reggae, to me.

Overrated in reggae, meaning, in the reggae music world, he is the only one who has that fame. There are a lot more. Peter Tosh, for example.

But, not overrated in music, in general. Outside the reggae music world, he is like the 'spokesperson' of reggae, and thats nice, its good. He was awesome, wrote cool lyrics, and that a good way to introduce someone to reggae.

    Here is one of my most favourite songs of his;

This man WAS a legend. His music touched millions. He laid the groundwork for a lot of ska and reggae existing today BUT unfortunately HE still can't beat music of super legend JONAS BROTHER.Jonas Brother is a GOD of MUSIC
