Magic the Gathering question? Trying to play again.?

If anyone out there knows me, they know I love card games like Yugioh Magic and stuff. But I haven't played Magic in years and a hobby shop in another city just started doing friday night magic (which starts next friday @ 5pm). Is there any changes I should know about? (note: the last time I played Magic was about 5 years ago).

Well, you should have been around for 6th Edition, which was the last majro rules change before the ones that went in along with Magic 2010 just a few weeks ago.

The main difference with M10's rules is that damage no longer goes on the stack, so you can't have a creasture deal and take damage in combat, then use its ability for some extra effect or get unsummoned to prevent it from going to the graveyard.

Also, Lifelink and Deathtouch are now static effects, so multiple copies of them do not stack. Also, if a creature is killed by lethal damage and by Deathtouch, they no longer have to regenerate twice to survive.

Mana now disappears from you mana pool at the end of each step of a turn rather than the end of each phase, but mana burn no longer exists.

They also clarified which of the "end of turn" effects ocur at the actual end of your turn, and which occur at the beginning of the "end of turn" step.

Most of the other changes were semantics, like the "in play" area is not called the "battlefield", and the "removed from the game" area is now called the "Exiled zone".

I just recently came back to MTG as well. And my God has M10 changed some things, lol.

The guy above got almost everything right. The nice thing is you no longer have to worry about mana burn, as your mana depletes after every step (which is not a huge deal unless you're playing very awkwardly to begin with) :)

they changed the mulligan rule- i can't remember it verbatim, and im at work so i can't look it up - but make sure you read up on the new mulligan rule - i've heard quite a few people complaining about it.

Also - keep in mind that very shortly the newest set is coming out - Zendikar. So before you go dropping some $$$ on M10 Core - i'd recommend holding out for the new stuff. You can preorder a box of boosters right now for $80
