Depends on your needs. I recommend getting a new computer every 3-5 years. The parts on your computer start to get really outdated and start becoming unreliable and pointless to replace.

If you run software that is very hardware intensive, i would buy a new computer closer to the 3 year mark.

If you're just using it to surf the net and word processing, i would use it untill it becomes a pain in the butt to even use it.

Most probably replace it every 4 or 5 year, but it also depend on how well you take care of the laptop. If someone doesn't take good care of it or if they bought a bad model or brand, then that may have to replace it in 2 or 3. If someone take good care of the laptop, then they could make it last 4 to 7 years.

Usually every three years it's time for Laptop hunting and as a Geek Squad member, Christmas Time means Tylenol Time for me. I get most questions like: What's the best security programs and How often do laptops need updates and obviously I'm not Bill Gates so I don't know when PCs need to get updates but PCs don't last as long as Macs. Macs usually last about 4-6 years because they are expensive and people have to take care of them. PCs on the other hands are lest costly and usually last 2-5 years.
