Why Do Many on the Left Love Hugo Chavez?

During the last year of college I have sat next to and talked to two different people who recently immigrated to the US from Venezuela and both did so to escape Hugo Chavez. One who's father worked as a geologist for an oil company lost EVERYTHING. His pension and retirement savings were confiscated by the dictator Chavez. They were not wealthy and even if they were that justifies no one to steal your wealth. His family was a typical productive middle class family and they were wiped out. It seems as though Chavez desires what every communist country before him desired. A ruling class and working/slave class.

It really irked me to hear that Oliver Stone has made a movie glorifying the militaristic dictator. Not to mention other elite liberals like Danny Glover, Brad Pitt, Sean Penn, and certain members of congress who have also glorified him and the likes of Fidel Castro. Not to mention one college professor of mine who about made me sick.

He has nationalized the oil, health, and utility industries. He expressed his desire to nationalize the communications industry (Hello, Freedom of speech!!) earlier this year. And currently, according to some recent news he is looking to shut down twenty plus radio stations that have expressed dissent towards him. He has created a military guard that is answerable only to him, similar to Saddam Hussein's Republican Guard.

We have seen this before in the past whether it be the rise of Lenin, Hitler, Castro, or Mao Zedong. Using class warfare to divide people and to destroy individual liberty in the name of the collective good, all with the goal of creating an utopia which has yet to be created. It is easier to control groups of people with group think tactics than it is individuals who think for themselves. And for those who know a little bit of history this is exactly why George Washington warned against the creation and solidification of political parties. I think political parties will form regardless, but the people don't have to submit to every agenda. And for the really informed voter I would say they don't, but most voters are not informed and they simply vote for for their favorite animal (Donkey or Elephant)

As a libertarian I have some liberal friends and I honestly don't think most liberals love and or approve of Hugo Chavez's many actions. I do think that many in positions of power or influence love him for some reason and I do think many common people sympathize with him, but we need to be careful about being so willing to give government broad powers. Especially if those powers are concentrated within one man or a bureaucracy that is outside the legislative process.

Update:

ohhhbrother....you are exactly the person I am talking about. Why make the assumption that I only watch Fox News simply because I don't agree with you. You probably watch only MSNBC and its left wing views don't you? So maybe I was wrong about Danny Glover, but there have been plenty of celebs and congressmen who have glorified Chavez. That was my point.

Update 2:

fretkill....you amuse me with your childish insults. Speaking of a coup against Chavez, do you not remember that it was Chavez who attempted but failed at his coup attempt in 1992?

But he is such a great leader I guess. Wonderful to live in a country with 27% inflation and where food and other essentials is hard to come by because of his wonderful price controls that always lead to shortages.

SO before you come barking back at me with your socialist garbage go pick up an economics book and learn why centralized government economic planning will always fail and never compares to the free market.

The evidence for these people supporting Chavez is slim to none - although Fox News ran headlines claiming it.

For instance Danny Glover has a movie which is being partially backed by the Venezuelan congress - which is based on a novel by the hugely popular Nobel Prize winning Columbian author Gabriel García Márquez.

That alone is the basis for claiming that Glover supports Chavez. Pure rank demagoguery.

Perhaps the Venezuelans should go back to the old system, where the USA propped up some dictator who pissed on the majority of poor people living in the barrios whilst keeping a small minority with all the money & power? Not to mention all that lovely oil that the USA got on the cheap (the USA meddling in a nation's affairs to get their oil?? Never!!). Chavez is demonized because he doesn't play ball, and he won't sell the USA cheap oil. He DOES use the revenue to help make life better for the poor of Venezuela-I've been there and seen it first hand, the only people who don't love Chavez are the elite classes.

As for him closing down tv & radio stations, again your question stinks of good old fashioned Fox news bullshite, and we all know how much the US right loves that. Let's consider RCTV, which has been proven to have been deeply involved in the 2002 coup against Chavez. It provided a great deal of pro-coup bias in its reporting, and one of the coup leaders Ramirez Perez also thanked publicly RCTV for its aid, when it was thought the coup had been successful. Yet The Venezuela Information Centre (VIC) notes: “In Britain, for example, TV and radio must adhere to the Broadcasting Code which embodies objectives that Parliament set down in the Communications Act of 2003. This states that ‘Material likely to encourage or incite the commission of crime or to lead to disorder must not be included in television or radio services‘ and that broadcasters must use their best endeavours so as not to broadcast material that could endanger lives.’ RCTV’s role in the coup would have clearly violated these laws. The irony of the all the right wing screaming in the US about Chavez closing down such networks is that if a similar event were to happen in the U.S., and TV journalists and executives were caught conspiring with coup plotters, it’s doubtful they would stay out of jail, let alone be allowed to continue to run television stations, as they have in Venezuela. Gordon Hutchinson of VIC noted that despite claims made by opponents of Chavez, there is no censorship in Venezuela, where 95% of the media is fiercely opposed to the government. This includes five privately owned TV channels controlling 90% of the market. All of the country's 118 newspaper companies, both regional and national, are held in private hands, as are 706 out of 709 radio stations.

So unless you know what you're talking about, STFU.

Contrary to what "Patois" says, left-wingers do hate America. The proof is right here on Yahoo! Answers. Every day you can see irrational rants by Liberals saying that America is evil and corrupt. They take perverse delight in hoping we will lose the fight to give the gift of democracy to Iraq. Their muddled little minds never stopped to consider that a society cannot exist when everyone insists on disrupting and interjecting their whiny, self-indulgent, pointless criticisms. Liberals must love dictators so much because Liberals have the political maturity of grade schoolers. Liberals rage blindly at a world they neither understand nor feel they belong to. Then they see the "simple" political process of a dictatorship like Cuba and think, "Wow, this is really cool. I can understand this." Ironically, they don't even come close to understanding. Mental light weights like Tim Robbins and Sean Penn are absolutely duped by these foreign governments. Talk about "useful idiots". Maybe the core reasons Liberals are so destructive to America is a form of self-loathing. On some level, they realize they don't deserve to have the great life that America gives them. They haven't worked particularly hard, nor contributed to society. Therefore, rather than suffer with the conflicted emotion of ingratitude, they are unconsciously sabotaging the country. It's just like when someone helps out a friend a little too much. The friend can't repay the kindness, and this causes him to feel very guilty. The person does not feel gratitude, but rather RESENTMENT. That's why Liberals hate America.
