What do I need to get a dog license for my dog?

Recently a puppy was dropped off at my door. I decided to take him in but I need to know how to get a dog license for him. The previous owner still has all his papers. She said he's had all his shots so now I need to know how to make this dog legally mine. What do I need to do?

This is the first dog that I've ever owned personally so if there's anything else I'm supposed to do please let me know!

Call a near by vet or the animal shelter they will be able to give you information on the licensing requirements for your area

Can you get the papers from the previous owner? That would probably help. Although I've never really been asked too many questions when getting a pet licence. My dog was adopted from the humane society and they provided the licence there. My cat was abandoned by his mother underneath the back steps of my house, and I had already taken him to the vet a couple times for shots with no licence, and then got the licence from the vet's office when I took him in to get neutered.

Try looking at the website for your local humane society and see what it says.

  • I go to the court building to get my dogs license. We just fill out a little form saying the dogs age, breed, gender and is they are spayed or neutered. We don't need any other papers from the vets. I think you may also be able to get them at your vets office but I don't know.

Get him and all of his papers to the vet - have the owner write a nice note saying you own him now. That way they can't try to take him back.

With the papers, your vet can get you a license.

The site I've listed should sum it up for you =0) Good luck with the puppy.
