Question for Vietnam Vets?
I hope you do not mind me asking, but how soon after boot camp/ basic did people get shipped off to Vietnam?

About a Year after AIT,I was in the 2nd armored division at ft hood TX,
my Squadron was alerted to Vietnam.

With me, it was five or six months.
It should have been longer for my MOS but I got orders for Vietnam about half way through the training.
I was at the top of my class so I assume that they had an immediate need and just grabbed me because they knew I could learn the rest on the job.

Don't know about the USMC, but recruits destined for the infantry went on to what was called "Advanced Infantry Training" after basic. Can't remember the length of AIT, but it was roughly double the length of basic.

6 months to a year, depending on the needs of the Army and what your job was.
