When my puppies have chewed on wood, its usually a corner part. You might try sanding down the splintered parts, but generally I'd say just make some of the worst of it look better and the rest will just be part of the history of the piece. One day you all will recall a special story about your puppy when you notice the chewed place on the beloved hope chest.
Anyway, a bit of sanding and even some wood filler can go a long way when taking back a beloved piece of furniture. Even a bit of sealer when you're done. If the puppy is still in a chewing stage, pet stores sell a sour apple spray that will make the wood taste badly and help keep the rest of your furniture nice.
