can I shoot at any event with a press card?

NO - a press card is not a magic wand to get you access all areas to anywhere.
"events" such as sporting, concerts etc are very selective who they invite/allow and you need proper credentials to apply/be accepted to shoot at them except as a "normal" member of the public.
"open" events such as festivals etc. which are held in public are obviously no problem and you might just possibly get access to more restricted areas of them if you can prove you are shooting for a specific publication.
It all really depends on what sort of "events" you are talking about.
