What does it mean if a guy gives mixed signals?

i mean mixed signals as in...does stuff you would expect your boyfriend to do, ask you to places and buy stuff for you and hold open doors, says stuff that makes it sound like he wants to kiss you or something, but aside from that only treats you like a friend (although a good one) and never makes a single move towards you? never returns the favor when you flirt with him and you can't even get a handshake from him? i'm dreadfully confused but haven't known him long enough to ask him about it without seeming creepy. can anyone help me? thanks.
