Why are canteens circular?

I always wondered that. Is it to hold more water or just design choice?

Well, not all of them are circular, especially now that many are made using blow-molded or injection-molded plastic. But in the days of metal canteens, a circular design was easy to construct, had a minimum total seam length for a given volume, and was a convenient shape (few protrusions or edges to catch on things.)

High volume to surface area ratio, no corners poking out

It really a combination of both wanting to hold more water and design choice.
