Thermal expansion is expansion of a material due to thermal effects. An example of such would be heating a metal plate. The metal plate increases slightly in size, and the increases are usually proportional to the temperature increase.

Δ L is the length the metal expands by
α is the thermal expansion coefficient.
Thermal contraction would be the opposite of expansion. As temperature goes down, the length/size of the object usually contracts and gets smaller. The equation used is the same is one above.
There are tables for α that give you expansion coefficients. There are also expansion coefficients for volume and surface area.

Thermal Expansion:
is an increase in a material's volume when its temperature increases.
Thermal Contraction:
is a decrease in a material's volume when its temperature decrease.
