I don't know, apparently it was retired by Pat Riley as a tribute to Michael. And yes, I got this from Wikipedia.

its just like why they retired a football legend's number, they want more attention, cuz lets face it, with wade talking about leaving, beasley getting in trouble with weed, they havnt gotten anny good publicity since they made the playoffs last yr.
another reason might be that they are one of the youngest teams and they feel that they need to retire jerseys to seem more professional? i dont know why, and they shouldnt retire his number anywhere other than 23, cuz we get to see more amazing players wear 23 like lebron
