The majority of states say that a full time student cannot get unemployment benefits. Why? Because the first rule of getting unemployment is the ability to work. And the unemployment people feel that a full time student is not available to work during the normal working hours.
As for asking for an extension... be warned that when asking the unemployment office to re-look at something they may find a problem and then expect you to pay back all the benefits you have already received. For a local employment law attorney go to www.nela.org National Employment Lawyers Assoc. and search on your city/state.

It depends on your state in regards to how long you can collect, usually 13 weeks. In many states, you are eligible for extension because you are in school. This may only apply to trade schools that last only a few months to a year, not a four year university.
