What is the title of this YA fiction book from '90s?

Question

There was a series of books, I think they had something to do with "the game."  They were kind of like Christoper Pike & R.L. Stine books, scary/thrillers, and a group of people who, I think, played a game.  There was a guy, who I think started out like their tour guide on the game, but was later after them? I cannot recall what these books were called and I don't have enough to Google - HELP!

Sounds like 'The Forbidden Game' by L.J.smith ^_^ The three books in the trilogy are 'The Hunt' / 'Hunter', 'The Chase' and 'The Kill'. they're harder to come by now, but there have been a lot of reprints of her books in 'The Vampire Diaries' and 'Nightworld' recently, so you should be able to pick up a copy on amazon.co.uk, amazon.com or bookdepository.com quite easilly soon! For now, maybe ebay, I'll be selling my own soon =)

The YA/fiction book is about a teen who is the result of a eugenics (genetics experiment). His parents were chosen based on their genes for this program, and he only finds out when he's older when (I think) one or both of his parents dies? He's a star football player and is forced to go on the run to avoid those who are chasing himâhe's an experiment gone wrong. Several scenes from the book I remember are him jumping on a train to get away, getting shot in the bicep, and at the start I think he works for his dad as a part time job (his dad is a scientist, I believe).
