ICC ODI ranking.. A Question...?
Recently India lost to SL in a group match in Compaq cup and slipped from No 1 position to No 3.
Then after winning against the same team in the Final Why it could not get back No 1 position?It got only No 2 position.
Is not a victory in a Final more valuable than a preliminary match?
@Evan,Only because I don't know much about the ranking system I have asked this Q.
To be simple How India could not regain the points it lost in a preliminary match after winning against the same team in a Final?
Does that mean that a win against any lower ranked team will not earn points even if it is a Final?
SL was in rank 7 when India lost and rank 5 when defeated in the final.
Though i have a rough idea how it could have happened,i just wanted to now how exactly it is calculated,and Vinz has given some useful details.

Look at this link:
http://www.cricinfo.com/rankings/content/current/p...
South Africa 18 2280 127
Australia 27 3413 126
India 29 3658 126
Pakistan 21 2297 109
You'll find that the rating is worked out by dividing the points by the matches played. On a loss, the number of matches goes up by one but the points stay the same (or increase very slightly). This means the rating goes down.
Here's an example:
A team plays 50 matches and gains 250 points.
Rating = points/matches
= 50
So the team's rating would be 50.
Now, if they were to lose a match, it would look like this:
51 matches with 250 points
Rating = points/matches
= 250/51
= 4.901960784
So the new rating = 4.902(it has dropped from 5)
Then, if they were to win the next match, it would look this way:
52 matches with 255 points
Rating = points/matches
=255/52
= 4.903846154 (which is lower than it was originally at 5)
Same applied with India; they won one and then lost one, causing a decrease in rating.

In ICC ranking, the points are calculated as given bellow
a) if a team with higher points wins against a team with a low points team then it gain less points and the loosing team will lose less points. But if a team with less points wins against a team with more points then it gains more more points and the loosing team will loose more points. The same thing happened with India also. when India lost to SL it lost 3 points while after winning in final it just gained just one point.
b) the same system continues for test matches also example in the recent happened WI vs Bangladesh test match before the match , before the series Bangladesh had zero points but after the series it gained 10 points by just 2 matches. The same would have not happened for WI if it had won 2-0
c) the same system continues for drawn matches. For eg before touring NZ in this year February, India had 119 points but even after winning the series 1-0 India lost 1 point because it had drawn 2 matches with a low ranked team

Each match holds a weightage regardless of the fact its a final or league match.
So India played 2 matches against SL in the series, went to make it 1-1, and that performance by the #1 team against a lower ranked is team is bound to cost them points.
@ Ronald: the difference of runs in a win/loss isn't considered as that would make it very complicated.

I did not realize a win against NZ was considered higher than a win against SL.
That is what I understand.
That a win against SL was not as good as compared with a win against England by the Aussies.

Let me know when you understand the system
Edit: To be honest, I dunno: SL was the same ranked when we lost the NO 1 spot, so a win the next day'd have got our points back, yet we didn't, so I don't understand it. I don't give much importance to the rankings: I want India to win as many matches and tourneys as possible, the rankings will take care of itself.

SL is lowest ranked team till the final also

SL is a lower ranked team, therefore you only have little to gain with a lot to lose.
