here in the states, we have these things called public radio stations. they tend to occupy the low end of the fm dial from 87.5 up to 91.9, some of them are sponsered by a college, but the occasional one is independent. these stations are not for profit, and frequently they employ a staff of volunteer DJs. these stations are more likely to play jazz, blues, local music to the area they are in, international music, and other stuff commerical radio is afraid to play. they dont broadcast commercials (apart from the occasional plug of a local business that donated to them) so every few months or so they do a fund rasing drive. usually they accept donations from anywhere willing to give, and frequently they will send you a shirt or a sampler CD or something as a thank you for your donation. I have supported my local KKFI and KCUR stations on and off for years, and i think if you are getting as much use out of that station as you say, you just might want to consider donating.

I was shocked to see you write that WBGO is off the air. They are always running fund raisers, and are the BIGGEST (not the best, in my opinion) jazz station in the USA.

I checked the WBGO website, and they are broadcasting live. Somehow, you have been misinformed. Try checking back on their website.

FYI- You might like to know about another jazz radio station. They are out of Columbia University in New York City. Unlike WBGO, they don't receive any grants of funding from any businesses. They are a truly a free form radio station.

Just to let you know what kind of station they are, I will tell you that on the birthday of 12 jazz legends, the station dedicates the whole day to that one legend, 24 hours of music, interviews, stories, etc on that legends birthday. Also, the DJ's speak like normal sane people, and not like some clownish radio personality.

You will hear stuff that you never knew existed. They spin old vinyl records often. They also play avant garde that WBGO won't touch. They dedicated an entire week to the sax legend Sam Rivers a few years ago.Its not a station for everyone, you might not like the station, but I figured I would let you know it existed. They don't have any money for advertising. So now you know about it, listen if you want. If you do, they only ask for money every few years, please donate to them.

Oh yeah, check the schedule, WKCR sometimes plays other styles of music besides jazz.

Don't worry about WBGO, that station is filthy rich. They are far from shutting down. Your pledges are paying for their luxuries. Those DJs are basically asking you for a raise.

PS- I agree with Wire and String, even if WBGO is rich, you should donate the amount that you have found them worthy of.
