Can removing the hard drive of my old computer be a do it yourself project?
I've read the warnings about possible electric shock. The computer got zapped when a transformer in my area blew a few months ago. It won't even turn on now.

To answer your question... Yes, removing the hard drive is a fairly simple task, but a bit daunting for somebody not familiar with building / upgrading computers. Quite a few people have already stated that, but I'll go much further...
I can totally 100% absolutely guarantee you that the hard drive is not what is causing your computer to not even be able to turn on.
If you're very lucky, the problem is just that you need a new power supply unit (PSU). However it is also likely that the motherboard is fried. If even one of the many circuits on the motherboard (main board) is fried your computer will not turn on. It could additionally be any or all of the components plugged directly into the motherboard (RAM, CPU, video card, sound card).
Basically, you need a lot of spare parts to trial and error which component in your computer got fried by the power spike. It is best for you to bring your computer to a computer repair shop and get an estimate on the repair. They will determine exactly what parts were damaged by the electrical spike and quote you on replacing them.
Note: you don't "fix" a computer by fixing parts. You "fix" it by figuring out which parts are not working and completely replace that part.

if the computer got zapped, then you just need to replace the power supply and not the hard drive.
very easy to do that if you are technically inclined or get a neighborhood geek to do it.

Inside your computer there is a power supply station coneted to the hard drive, its probly one of those flat bands. As long as it is disconected, and the computer is unplugged, there is nothing to shock you in the hard drive

ITs not a major task.
Just make sure your computer is unplugged and touch the outside of the computer case before reaching inside (to prevent static from harming your hardware)
MAKE SURE to unplug though, for your safety and the computer.
