How can St George improve for the 2010 season?

They lost 5 out of their last 6 games and their attack consists of either a high kick or get the ball to Morris. They didn't seem to be able to lift when it was required. I think they need someone in the halves who can control a match and direct the team around the field, like say Kimmorley. I thought Soward was poor again last night and is pretty much a one trick pony. He is also a liability in defence. Would someone like Kimmorley fix the Dragons? Thoughts.....................

DO YOU SEE NOW PEOPLE, YOU ALL WANT SOWARD TO PLAY FOR OUR COUNTRY, SEE WHAT IVE BEEN SAYING ALL ALONG, HOW MUCH HE SUCKS AND HOW BAD HE IS IN THE BIG GAMES, HOPEFULLY THOSE WHO WANTED HIM WILL HAVE LEARNED YOUR LESSON ABOUT JUMPING ON BANDWAGONS, anyway as for your question, they have a has been fullback at halfback and a weasel rat who sucks at five eighth and a backrower at hooker, you cant win a comp without having a good 6,7 and 9 and thats their problem, they need good players in their proper positions, also in their defense guys like poore, weyman and creagh had a huge workload with not only the normal season but origin as well and just looked exhausted last night

  • I thought Soward cut the Broncos up last night, on one occasion he threw a long ball which would of hit, Morris, Yow Yeh, any decent winger on the chest, that moment should be the epiphany which forces Sailor to retire. Like when Gilchrist dropped the sitter on Laxman. Sailor will exit with a proud past in the game if he realises it's time to hang up the boots. Boyd doesn't support, or score tries. Last night was the worst buy of 2009(Boyd) vs the worst buy of 2010(Hunt) and I think so many are crushed he is leaving the way he has been playing these last few weeks.

What they need is some stronger attacking forward. I think the loss of Justin Poore is an automatic improvement, what a back end of the season he had.. They need a Pritchard or Mateo type second rower, someone who can cause damage on their own, add something to their attack other then hands to Morris, which works very well admittedly.

If their captain can't control the halves then who can? I don't know if someone like Kimmorley can fix the Dragons, possibly because there is no other player like Kimmorley in the competition. If a better halfback comes along, not necessarily a terrific leader like Kimmorley, it will take pressure off Soward and will improve their game overall.

I think they will stay relatively strong, though they need stronger forwards, Boyd to move to the wing where he actually is a world class player, and a better full back will help the Dragons improve on a pretty good season.

I'm not a Dragons supporter but I do feel people have been expecting too much from Bennett in his first year. Players have had to learn new tactics and skills that he wants. There are players at the Dragons who Bennett would happily let go but because of contracts he is stuck with them.

They do need to change some personnel. Wendell is great but I think his days as a first grader are gone. Soward has a great kicking game, can throw a good pass and is a speed bump. Some of the forwards turned it up last night like the Wallaby forwards earlier in the evening.

As an aside, isn't it interesting that the Dragons wouldn't sign Graham Murray because he was a SL affiliated coach and they signed Brown. Now they have signed Bennett. Strange how things change.

You say Soward's a one try pony, but Soward is the Dragons only creative option. Hornby and Young offer nothing in attack. I thought Soward's chip and chase up the middle seemed to working quite well against the Broncos. I guess it's because they weren't expecting it. They thought they only had to defend against passing to Morris, cross field kicks to Wendell and close to the line charges from Ben Creagh.

A few simple positional changes would help the Dragons. Mat Head at halfback and starting Fein at hooker would provide more attacking and creative options. Move Creagh into the centres. It worked for Dave Taylor and it will work Ben Creagh. Also, either Nightingale or Hornby needs to be at fullback. Someone who is actually going to provide support play.

As a matter of fact, the team as a whole needs to work on it's support play. At the moment it's virtually non-existent. The ball runner needs offload options at all times. The kicker needs kick chasers at all times. It's interesting that you bring up Kimmorley. He leads the kick chase, he organises the defence and the attack and his example leads others to support him and their team mates. Hornby doesn't offer these services, so he's effectively a passenger at halfback.

    Hands off Noddy lol.

But I do agree with you they need a top class half - 5/8 combination or a half hooker combination like the Dogs.

Maybe Morris could come replace El Masri and join his Bro hahah.

Seems that everytime something goes wrong during the game Soward drops his head and it takes him 5 or 10 minutes to start thinking again, cant have that in his key position, take a look at Noddy never shuts up lol - I think the players keep winning just to shut him up and thats OKKKK with me .

They definitely need a good half. No offence to Hornby but he is not a half back. Kimmorley will add more experience and leadership to the team and will definitely help out the Dragons.

They also need to get rid of Sailor. He is way too slow and old to be a winger. I think a good half could relieve Soward of some pressure because it seems pretty much every play goes to him so he feels a lot of pressure.

Yes they do need a leader in the halves to control and direct this team. Dragons would definitely improve with someone like Kimmorley. But honestly they need to get rid of Sailor and Soward. Both overrated and neither can step up for their team in pressure situations.

Its a good question ???? the answer is simple the salary cap is hindering all teams sure the comp is very close but the spectacle is ruined as every team is missing the golden player that they need and I agree Soward is over rated he chokes in the pressure games and Sailor is to old and to slow for a winger now he should be in the centres and has maybe one more year left and Bennet is doing a great job but the players have to listen and learn !

I think Bennett had them playing to their potential - good for regular season but unable to lift a notch for Finals.

To really improve next year they need an attacking forward (along the lines of Watmough) and an attacking back who would maybe take some of the pressure off Soward and let him play more of his own game.

They need someone that can hold onto the ball 5 metres away from the tryline, lol.

I really think Wayne Bennett didn't convince them to back themselves.

They had a cracking year and a coach can only do so much.

They'll win it next year if they get these 2 things right. BUT they'll have to be right on top of their game at the business end of the season if they're to beat Wests Tiigers in 2010!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
