How can you make a cat get used to having another animal in the house?

Me & my sister might be getting a dog for our birthday but my cat is scared of them. and if the dog is small enough she'll hiss at it and try to attack it. She reacts different every time she sees another cat or dog. Sometimes she's playful and just sniffs it, other times she gets really aggressive. If we get this dog and she doesn't like it, are there any ways of making sure they can get along well?

my mom had a 5 month old puppy stay overnight to see how the cat would react.

amber[cat] sniffed the puppy and would just comeup to the puppy and hiss at him, and then the puppy would bark and bark, like nonstop, then amber ran away from home for like a couple of hours.

my mom had to return the puppy, b/c amber was feeling neglected, so i dont think introducing a new puppy to the house would be a good idea, unless the cat is young and the puppy is fair tempered.

particular, that is everyday. I had a kitten for roughly 2 months and merely those days presented a sparkling cat to the kin and that they hated one yet another. The older cat would attack it each threat it have been given and the extra youthful cat would run and cover in concern. It have been given so undesirable that they had me in tears at one element, haha. They have been given over this in spite of the undeniable fact that.. after approximately 4 days or so.. maybe somewhat much less. they're now terrific of buddies and run around and play at the same time. merely carry in there.. they're going to recover from it. Time heals all.
