Sealing a slate tile floor? What to use & how?

We have a slate tile floor all thru our ranch. It is polished, and a pain in the behind to maintain. I have 2 little boys who spill and drool and spit up constantly, and I don't want to have to strip the floor polish w/ ammonia and re-polish to make it look clean anymore. Can I use something to SEAL the slate so that it will be easier to maintain and I can just steam clean or mop it? (I understand this might give it a shiny or "wet" look. I don't mind that.) Any suggestions on the best way to strip and clean the floor prior to sealing, on the best product to seal with or any other tips would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Update:

If anyone has any advice on how to strip off the old polish or prep the floor for sealing, I'd love to know that too. Thanks! Great answers so far!

Silicone Sealer sold in tile stores. Just pour it on, spread it around with a cloth or sponge and let it dry. Buff the slate with cloth to make it shine. The nice thing about Silicone Sealer is it isn't slick like Poly Urethane sealers. Less chance of a fall.

Yah, it's easy, but expensive. Just clean the floor one last time, spread the sealer (from Home Depot) on all the tiles and grout. Wait til it dries, and you're done.
