Create a Google Local Business listing, and optimize it for your most appropriate keywords. Something like [city name] + [handyman], I would expect.

You also might look at Google AdWords and other paid search advertising. Be careful, however. While it's easy to start spending money on Google, it takes a bit of skill to start making money there.

I would suggest three different things:

    1. Craigslist - It is incredible how many things you can find on craigslist and people use it daily for everything. It's free to post and your email is anonymous.

    2. Online listings/postings - I was trying to make some money on the side once by doing yard work. I posted my offer on the local college online job listing and I got tons of jobs at local houses. Word of mouth will help you out here as well.

    3. If you are a bit more advanced with computers, I highly recommend using Google AdWords. It is super easy to set up, you can write your own ad and you only pay a few cents every time someone clicks on your ad. You can create a small website with the main info and add your phone number in your ad. So say you are located in Springfield, MA. You can bid on a keyword called "local handyman work springfield, Massachusetts" and when people google that they will likely see your ad.

Word of mouth is the most effective method. So, go door to door introducing yourself and handing out business cards. Also, put a few ads into the local papers. This shouldn't run you more than $100.

You can get super cheap business cards from Vista Prints. I'll include a link for you.

There are some really good answers, which you should take advantage of all of them.

    I would add:

Before and after pics of your work. Place them online as well as in a binder.

Get video testimonials from your past clients commenting on numbers, quality, etc. Transcribe them for your binder and include their picture.

What's your offer and guarantee? Make sure you're different than your competitors.

Magnetic Sign on your vehicle with Name and Phone #. Hand deliver flyers to certain neighborhoods. Signs with Phone #'s at the bottom that can be torn off - hang in grocery stores, corner stores, laundromats, taxi stands, deli's etc.

Create a website and then try google's pay per click. That way you can target your local market whenever they're online.

First step try to get AS POPULAR AS POSSIBLE "LOCALLY" spread it my mouth....nothing works as good as suggestion calling ur local radio station is also an excellent idea...getting popular locally makes u kind of a landmark in your locality. this way visitors from other towns are suggested to check out your stuff. the more locally popular you get the more outsiders you attract !!!!!!!!

    Hope This Helps
