Clean install of Windows 7 (from Windows Vista Home Premium), how to backup data?

I currently have Windows Vista Home Premium. I recently purchase Windows 7 Home Premium Full CD, and not the upgrade. This will result in having to do a clean install. The problem is, however, that I have many programs which I have the product keys for, but not the CD to install them. An example of this is Microsoft Office Professional 2003, of which the CD is lost but the product key is written down.

How can I backup these programs so I can then install them onto Windows 7, in a way that does not cost me any money?

You can't. With the Windows 7 Full CD, you'll be able to upgrade your existing install. But then you'll just create a messed up version of Windows; you'd be better off keeping Vista. Maybe you could ask around at computer stores and see if they'll let you borrow the media. You can also buy it on ebay. Because Office 2003 has product activation, you can buy it for pretty cheap and use your license key.

Yes, you can do an in-place upgrade from Vista Home Premium to Windows 7 Home Premium or Windows 7 Ultimate. An in-place upgrade is when your files, settings, and programs get carried over. The only difference between the "upgrade" and "full" discs is that the upgrade ones want to see a prior installation of Windows to go in and activate correctly. The full ones can get installed to a blank hard drive.

First of all, clean installation is always recommended for best performance. Just use some free programs to know the keys. Just download the Office or other programs again and then install it.

But I am wondering how come you are not getting upgrade option.

Can't be done. Are you sure Windows 7 will not do an upgrade? That's the only way to do it without losing all your apps
