Sad question about having a dog put down.?

Our dog is very, very old, and is sick with cancer. We're probably going to have to have her put down in the next week. Does anyone here know approx how much it costs to do this, and then to have the remains cremated?

:.-(

Update:

She's a black lab. About 80-85 lbs. My husband and I are both going to be with her when the time comes.

Update 2:

Thanks for the answers and words of comfort, everyone. My heart is broken, but I know it's the right thing to do, and it's the right time. I'm glad that she will be able to have a peaceful, painless passing rather than suffering terribly from the cancer. Maybe someday humans will be so lucky.

I don't think you'll be looking at more than $100-$200.00.

I am so sorry to hear of this. (((Catherine)))

They go by body weight and the amount of euthanasia used on that dog based on their weight. a 30-40lb dog would be around 40-50 dollars, and up from there. course it also depend on your vet. some offer a flat rate, others go by weight.

I've had to put some beloved pets to sleep as well, and it's very very hard. But there is no more pain, it's the most loving thing you can do for her and i'm sure she knows how much you love her and are worried about this. it's hard to say good bye. I am so sorry that you have to go through this but i know you are doing what is best for her.

Cremations you can ask your vet about. every county has different fees. one county i was in i needed to file several different forms and paid almost 200 dollars, while in another county i just filled out a form w/my vet and it was 80 dollars. it depends.

I live in the Northwest suburbs of Chicago and I pay $65 for the shot and then it depends on the URN you choose.I paid around $255 for each dog I have cremated. My dogs were around 7-14lbs.The last time I had a large dog cremated in the 70's it was $120..So really it depends on your vet and the cremetoriam.Sorry about your dog I know what a difficult decision this is,I have gone thru this to many times.

I completely understand your pain and frustration.

This past June I euthanized my 18 month old Aussie to end his suffering from bronchial cancer. It was the hardest, most painful thing that I have ever had to do, and it hurts to this day. But I know that if I wouldn't have relieved him, he would be in horrible pain.

My vet didn't charge me anything for Max's euthanasia, as we had been longtime clients and he understood the amount that we'd spent trying to save his life. Had he of charged us, it would have been $40 dollars.

We didn't cremate Max, but the option was there. It would have been $150 with an urn, but he was a 100 pound dog. Smaller dogs will cost less.

Dear Catherine, I am so sorry to hear of your loss. They become like family members to us, so I know how difficult it can get...

Pricing depends upon size of the animal. A cat I had to have put down was around $85, and the cremation was another $120. Thats out here in California, where everything costs more...

It is kinda weird how we seem to have more compassion for animals than we do for humans... putting down a dog with cancer is the "right thing" to do, but Kervorkian is a criminal. Go figure...

Since we'd had our dog in to the vets for a battery of tests just prior to finding out that her kidneys were failing, our vet didn't charge us for the euthanasia (we paid several hundred for the tests).

The cremation cost $125, with her ashes in a plastic container. We bought our own urn.

My thoughts and prayers are with you. Yes, it IS the right thing to do. She has depended on you all these years, and depends on you now to help her end her life gently, without pain.

Yes, I also hope that humans will be so lucky one day...

VERY sorry to hear about your dog.

Our local shelter will do cremation for $35.

My vet does not charge to put dogs (patients) down but I think this is unusual.

We have our big dog buried by a butterfly bush in the front yard. He liked to sit out there and watch the neighborhood.

Dogs do not have to be cremated- it is your choice.

  • The cost is based on the size of the dog.. as sick as that is I guess they have to calculate it some way. If you ask me such mercy should be free. As for cremation I have no idea, but I'm guessing it will be at least 100 bucks. Not much to ask to put a priceless friend to rest..

I'm sorry that your dog is sick and old, I know how much it hurts to have to let go and set them free. But I'm sure you know it's best to end suffering for all involved. My condolences to you.. Peace..

I feel for you, Sweetheart. We have to put our 13 year old miniature poodle(who is not yappy like a lot of small dogs) that we've had since CONCEPTION(we owned his mother and father, too, and I saw him be born!) down TOMORROW. He's mostly blind, mostly deaf, seems to be struggling to breathe...It would be cruel to let him continue running into walls and being generally confused because he can't hear or see much anymore.

It's costing my mother $105, because she is choosing to stay in the room with him so he won't be alone.

When we had our old cat put down, I'm pretty sure it cost an extra $50-$75 for us to have some of the ashes when they cremated him.

So sorry to read about your dog. The best thing you can do for her is to put her down. I had to have one of my dogs put down due to old age and the vet explained what he was doing and how she was going to react and it was very peaceful and dignified. Afterward, I was so glad I had stayed in the room while it was done because it gave me the chance to tell her how much she was loved and the vet spoke to her very gently.

I lived in Maryland when this happened so I don't really know how things are done in SC. I think at the time it cost me about $60-75.

God bless you and know you are doing the right thing.

First and foremost, you have my heart. I cannot begin to say how many times I have been through this.

Call your vet and find out. My vet does not charge me for euthanizing.

    The cremation is always nominal.

Be there with your dog. Hold her head and let the last thing she feels is your love.
