It was the sight of one of the main training facilities for the Union forces during the Civil War. It was actually supposed to be invaded by the South, but a Union messenger found Lee's plan's scribbled on a cigar wrapper. Union forces headed off the South's attack in what is known as the battle at Antiem (sp?) Creek.
