Are there poor areas surrounding the CBD of London?

And is this typical of MEDC cities?

what strange abbreviations you're using ... I had to look them up and guess that CBD is central business district and MEDC is More Economically Developed Country

of course there are poor areas surrounding the central areas of London ... surely it's true of any city in any country in the world that it has richer areas and poorer areas ... the poorer areas in London are not shanty ghettos though

This depends what you define the CBD as in London. For the purposes of answering this question, I would consider the CBD to be the City of Westminster and the financial district.

If you take that to be the CBD, then there are poor areas in the CBD's vicinity but not directly adjacent to it (which goes against the Burgess model). Instead, the areas next to Westminster are the quite affluent areas of Chelsea and Kensington. However, the areas immediately across the Lake are indeed poorer (but not high-rise flats poor).

London's layout is quite typical of MEDCs. The Burgess model is based on American cities and the suburban sprawl — in most American cities, the poorer areas were and are the areas near the CBD. In London, there is a ring of high-cost housing the wraps around the CBD and then you encounter lower-cost living areas.

    Hope this helped,

Yes of course. The Central Business District of London is very affluent and so are some of the residential areas surrounding it.

The poorer areas of London tend to be filled with high rise apartment blocks and so on. We certainly don't have shanty towns in the UK - that would never be allowed to happen. We also have organisations for the Homeless - and people who travel around London trying to get those who choose to live rough into Shelters.

When I lived in the US I was quite shocked at the poverty surrounding some of the wealthiest areas. I mean it was really bad- people begging in the streets and so on. Some illegal immigrants do that here and we can't stand it- it offends us and we try to get these people into some form of accomodation.
