The people of Iran remember the times when Iran was a respected nation in the world where people come to visit - to learn its histroy and see their magnificent sights , and even study at their prestigious uiversities where some of the top academia teach and reside.
They want a semblance of that life back.
The religious extremists who are running iran now fielded a man to act the part and to make the people happy.
The people want to elect their own.

Well, most people THINK he is a dictator, or has dictator powers, when he does not at all.
The Iranian president gives speeches, and MAY have a little say in economic policy from what I understand. Like our president, he has powers to appoint. He has NO control over the military.

To be a front man for the Ayatollahs! In other words, he is window dressing, plain and simple.
