Do you think it's fair to call Richard Petty the king when he won all those races?

When he had a bigger engine then most of the other drivers, and Competition was not as fierce as when Dale Earnhardt came along, they both have 7 cups and Richard is called the king.

no! i do not think it is fair for him to be called the King. this is coming from a woman's view.what, i could find out was that, the chevy 348, 396, 402 & 409 even the 427 doesn't even compare to the 426 hemi that, the so called King was running.

Source(s): i have two book sources at this time, life & sports illustrated.
  • Richard Petty is old school. Richard Petty's father, Lee, was one of NASCAR's first early "stars". Lee won 3 championships 1954, 1958, and 1959. He won a total of 54 NASCAR races including the first Daytona 500 in 1959.....

Richard is Lee's son. He took up where his father left off. The King has gone on to win 200 NASCAR races during his career. He won 7 championships. He set two records! The only other driver to equal Richard Petty is Dale Earnhardt Sr.

Dale Sr. won 7 championships, was a four time winner of the (IROC) International Race of Champions series, 1990, 1995, 1999, 2000. He entered 676 cup races and won 76 of them. Dale Sr. won his first Daytona 500 in 1998 - it took him 19 tries to do it!

I guess the edge would be Richard Petty has won more races than Dale Sr., according to the stats.

By the way, this is a good question.

EDIT: I agree with Chuck - nobody could pull that hat off as well as the King!!!!

First off, the engine comment is just dumb. He had the same engine in his car that was available to every Dodge or Chrysler team and was allowed by Nascar. The Hemi engine was only legal in Nascar for a few years. 200 victories, 127 poles, and 7 Daytona 500 victories. I could go on and on, but Petty's record speaks for itself. Not to mention all the thousands of hours he spent making sure every fan that wanted an autograph got one. Competition was not as fierce? No, he just had to beat guys like Cale Yarborough, Darrel Waltrip, Ned Jarrett, David Pearson, Bobby Allison, and everyone else out there.

Dale Earnhardt never wanted to be the king.

In his own words after winning his 7th championship... "There is only one king and that's Richard Petty"

HEY, EVEN I NEAL AND BOW TO THAT MAN!

even tho, lately, I feel he hasn't made some good decisions with RPM, that doesn't mean he's not the same man that won for all those years!

I Still Respect the Man, The Legend, The KING, Richard Petty!!!

    well petty was there first

    let's put it this way

    he is the "original"

    and he deserves it

    anyways

ppl have ALOT of respect for Dale Earnhardt :]

    so

    it's equal

i mean dale has had movies made about him so that says something

    Wrong.

He had the same size engines as everyone else. Back in the day, Petty Racing was the Hendrick of the times.

I don't see how anyone else will ever win 200+ races with the modern schedules that we have.

    He is 'the king'.........

  • Yes ofcourse! He deserved it. Back then, he didn't just arrive at the track and get in the car. He built his own cars in his backyard and towed them to the track himself.

Take away half of his wins and he's still #1

Dale Earnhardt was the best, David Pierson was second, and Richard was third, but he is still The King..

competrion was just a fierce and as for the engines... it was all stcok parts and available to all
