    They were a tool. He distrusted them and feared that they might revolt against the Nazi Party. When he came to power he made all military members swear an oath of allegience to himself, not the German State. He also, thankfully, thought he was a better general than his generals.

    well, in Stalingrad when 500,000+ German troops were surrounded by about a million russians Hitler refused to let his commanders forfeit. He forced them to fight to the death and encouraged his commanders in Stalingrad to commit suicide and not become prisoners.

    He gave them speed, which helped them fight fearlessly and successfully.

    Any leader who'd give his troops "performance enhancing drugs" (dry humor there) would probably be looked at favorably by his men.
