2000 Ford Explorer idle air control valve problem?

I have a 2000 ford explorer, 4liter. The vehicle is as good as new with 65,000 miles. I maintain it very well. However, it does not idle well. It idles very low to where it will stall. It will restart right back up. Sometimes it will snap back to where is should. Then the next time, it will be back to the low idle. Is this the idle air control valve?

since you did not mention it, i am assuming the check engine light is not on. iac problems are very common on these. more oftern then not they do not set any codes. does the problem occur more on cold start-up? this is another indicator of a sticking iac. one thing you could try to verify a bad iac is this - raise the hood before you start the car and have a small hammer handy. start the vehicle and while the engine is stumbling, TAP on the iac motor with the hammer. if this alters the engine running, the iac is definitely bad. this is generally effective, but even this sometimes does not work...the iac is relatively inexpensive and easy to replace, so your best bet may be "replace with a known good component"...good luck

It could be a sticky IAC, but I would thoroughly clean the throttle body and check for any vacuum or unmetered air leaks first.

It may be the intake manifold gaskets and seals. Very common and Ford has updated these parts for this problem.
