Our REPUTATIONS here on the "C.M." forum: important? Not so? Care to respond to a survey?
Sometime ago I posted a similar question, but deleted it before any could respond: out of fear I suppose that I would be perceived as "judgmental", perhaps arrogant or pedagogical. A regular patron emailed me later inquiring why I had deleted it, stating they thought it was a good question; and I explained why.
But given the recent affair regarding a certain claimed to be "aristocrat", and other disconcerting postings by "trolls" which will go unnamed, I thought it time that the issue of reputation be addressed; so I'm taking the "bull by the horns" so to speak, at the risk of being "lambasted" for doing so.
If you decide to respond, please be considerate and respectful: I request that no user names be referenced in any context - thank you.
Survey questions:
1) mis-categorized questions - if you respond, in what manner?
2) an identified "song", which is not a song - " " " " ?
3) in general, what % of the time do you respond out of exasperation/annoyance, when on second thought, you decide that perhaps diplomacy might have been best?(please be honest)? Me? 5-10%.
4) what % of the times in an instance of 3), do you take the time and make the effort to edit your response to reflect your change of heart? Me? 5%
5) if even after say a day or two(or more) has elapsed, you realize that you posted incorrect information, do you edit your response so as to correct it? Me? 99%
6) what % of the time do you feel you could have composed a better response, had you taken the necessary time to do so? Me? Rarely: I usually rewirte several times if the question I feel requires it in order for my response to be comprehensive and "meaningful".
7) would you care to add and respond to a survey question(or more)of your own? Please feel free to do so.
Alberich
Thanks "Joshua": you've been probably more candid than most would/will be.
"rdenig_m...": Forsooth - you sound like you've becoming somewhat "jaded".
<><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><
"MissLimLam": I really didn't think any of the regulars posting on this forum, would have forgotten the rather dis-tasteful "to do", about ---------------if I must identify them-----------------the good 1st, "Baroness", and later, the "Duchess": need I really add anything further?
<><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><
Thanks to all for your responses; I learned some things; trust that you did also?
And, sorry, but how does one choose a best answer? I can't.

This is an interesting question! I love it!
1) It depends... Sometimes there really is no better place to ask than here. (For example the 'singing' section is full of idiots) but when it is somebody confusing "classic" with "classical" (etc.) then I get pissed off and dont answer well.
2) If it is someone who is genuinely interested in classical music, but is just a little ignorant, then I will answer... otherwise I get peeved.
3) 13.7 %!
4) 50% When I realise that I appear a total ***** or that I said something offensive to somebody I care about, I try to change that!
5) YES! Of course. I always recheck the questions I answer, incase I said something stupid during a brief moment of insanity....
6) I write it once... but I will go back to it if I think of more.
I cant think of any more questions.... but Alberich, I cannot let a passage of your question go by without comment, the one where you say "certain claimed to be "aristocrat", and other disconcerting postings by "trolls" which will go unnamed." May I ask what you are referring to? I havent been on much lately (I broke my laptop :P ) and so I am not sure exactly what you are talking about.
EDIT:
Ok, so this was about reputations!
Of my own, yes I care.
Have we not all "worked hard" to get a good one?
I guess I dont care that much though, or none of you would know anything about me, other than my musical taste... But then again, there are things that I choose not to tell for fear of what all of you people would think... but that is not so much about my "reputation." No, it is about not wanting to disappoint people that I respect and care about, by making stupid mistakes...
EDIT 2:
Ok, I should have guessed as much! I was wondering if this was about something more recent though :P lol...

1) mis-categorized questions - if you respond, in what manner?
If someone's asking about Yiruma, I just point out that he doesn't write classical music. If someone's asking about pop music, I admit I take the two points and tell them that they're in the wrong place.
2) an identified "song", which is not a song - " " " " ?
"[that piece] isn't a song, it's a [what it is]." I try to be nice about it; most people have only ever heard songs...which is really rather depressing when you think about it. Anyway, I usually figure that whoever's asking is just ignorant, as I was when I first got interested in classical. What bugs me is when someone asks a question which is ignorant, miscategorized, or both, and then gets all snippy when his/her mistake is pointed out.
3) in general, what % of the time do you respond out of exasperation/annoyance, when on second thought, you decide that perhaps diplomacy might have been best?(please be honest)? Very, very rarely.
4) what % of the times in an instance of 3), do you take the time and make the effort to edit your response to reflect your change of heart? Whenever I've messed up.
5) if even after say a day or two(or more) has elapsed, you realize that you posted incorrect information, do you edit your response so as to correct it? Always, if I can.
6) what % of the time do you feel you could have composed a better response, had you taken the necessary time to do so? Probably about 10%. If I'm on at 5:30 AM (which would mean about 21-22 hours without sleeping) and I've answered a question, it usually needs revision.

1. mis-categorized questions:
I hardly ever respond, can't be bothered so usually leave it up to others.
The few times I do it would be polite and concise
that is unless they have butchered the language in some hideous lazy way or failed to show any etiquette and thereby forfeit any respect due.
2. Improper use of the word song:
If I can help with the question and they've presented it in a proper manner then I will in responding either
A - politely point out their error or sometimes
B - I just use several of the appropriate terms in my answer in the hope that they pick up on the correct terminology without seeming to berate them, depending on the context of the question etc.
3. % of response borne from exasperation:
This is hard to calculate.Previously I would say around at least 10% now I would guess around 3% of my replies would I subsequently decide I should have been a tad more diplomatic.
I try to make sure those who get short shrift are deserving more these days.
4. re.editing "What % of the time in an instance of 3": ???
Sorry Alberich I don't fully understand the question.
If I had a change of heart as regards any reply I would either remove it completely,I do this quite a lot, or edit it appropriately at the bottom.
Percentage of my answers that would apply? I honestly couldn't say.
5. Posting incorrect information:
100 % I either remove the said response or edit it accordingly.
6. % of time I think I could have responded better:
Hmmn, very seldom perhaps 3 %.
I always try to respond in the most helpful way and yes my replies sometimes go through several drafts before they ever appear often to find the question has already been answered more fully in the same time it took me.
I suppose this figure (3%) could also apply to question 4 which I didn't fully grasp?
7. % of time you read other all other answers to a question before you respond?
Myself I would say 100 %.

Mephisto

Nah, it's a great question. Intriguing...
Hmm...
1) mis-categorized questions - if you respond, in what manner?
I usually respond with a joke or I am very abusive (have been told off for it, actually! :-) )
2) an identified "song", which is not a song?
"You should know the difference. A song is sung, you see?"
3) in general, what % of the time do you respond out of exasperation/annoyance, when on second thought, you decide that perhaps diplomacy might have been best?
About 5% of the time...
4) what % of the times in an instance of 3), do you take the time and make the effort to edit your response to reflect your change of heart?
Again, about 5% of the time :-)
5) if even after say a day or two(or more) has elapsed, you realize that you posted incorrect information, do you edit your response so as to correct it?
9%!! I always do it. It bugs me, sometimes.
6) what % of the time do you feel you could have composed a better response, had you taken the necessary time to do so?
100% (sorry for the exaggeration but it's true!) I always think back on my responses...did I help? Was I too mean? Should I have added more links?
And I have a seventh time (might not be as imaginative as yours):
7) What % of the time do look over your answers only to find that you have made a massive mistake?
That question might only apply to me... :S

1) mis-categorized questions
Ignore, point out the error of their ways. Sometimes a phrase within the question demands an off-the-wall response.
2) an identified "song", which is not a song:
"Song sung blue. Weeping like a willow.
Song sung blue. Sleeping on my pillow"
.... wait, that was a response to #1 :-)
3) in general, what % of the time do you respond out of exasperation/annoyance, when on second thought, you decide that perhaps diplomacy might have been best?(please be honest)?
Very few times have I gone back to completely edit an answer. Sometimes I'll add clarifying remarks. Either I don't answer, or it's 99%.
.... "you get what you get and you don't pitch a fit."
4) what % of the times in an instance of 3), do you take the time and make the effort to edit your response to reflect your change of heart?
None.
5) if even after say a day or two(or more) has elapsed, you realize that you posted incorrect information, do you edit your response so as to correct it? Me? 99%
99%. (just like you ... but half the time the question has been deleted or a winner has already been selected.) Sometimes I just go back and delete.
6) what % of the time do you feel you could have composed a better response, had you taken the necessary time to do so? Me? Rarely: I usually rewirte several times if the question I feel requires it in order for my response to be comprehensive and "meaningful".
It takes me forever to answer some questions ... It could have been asked five seconds ago, and by the time I'm done composing an answer, there are already five well-thought out responses (Usually by Nemesis, Petr B. and Del_icio....)
... Oh, but we weren't using names.
7) would you care to add and respond to a survey question(or more)of your own? Please feel free to do so.

'owdy Alberich!
1) mis-categorized questions - if you respond, in what manner?
I usually try to be as lighthearted and polite as possible, unless I'm really in a bad mood. I usually just direct them to the correct category...
2) an identified "song", which is not a song - " " " " ?
Trying to avoid utter chastisement, I usually try to correct them on their usage, towards the end of the answer... As an afterthought 'FYI' kind of thing...
3) in general, what % of the time do you respond out of exasperation/annoyance, when on second thought, you decide that perhaps diplomacy might have been best?(please be honest)? Me? 5-10%.
Hahaha... This made me laugh... I don't really have the time to answer pointless questions nowadays. Lately, I've been going for quality, only picking a few great questions that I have expertise in and giving really good answers... I'd have to say, as of late, 0%...
4) what % of the times in an instance of 3), do you take the time and make the effort to edit your response to reflect your change of heart? Me? 5%
Non-applicable...
5) if even after say a day or two(or more) has elapsed, you realize that you posted incorrect information, do you edit your response so as to correct it? Me? 99%
Yes, that is if I look at the question later on, which isn't very often... But I'd say 100%...
6) what % of the time do you feel you could have composed a better response, had you taken the necessary time to do so? Me? Rarely: I usually rewirte several times if the question I feel requires it in order for my response to be comprehensive and "meaningful".
As I said, I'm going for quality... An average response takes about 'olly takes about 10+ minutes, that's because I'm trying to give as insightful answers as possible... Don't always succeed... I would wager 0%
7) would you care to add and respond to a survey question(or more)of your own? Please feel free to do so.
Eh, no...
Toodles...

1 - answer those about 20% of the times .. 75% with a with a somewhat hostile comment maybe 1% with a real answer (I do have guilty pleasures)
2 - almost never answer those answers which need a you tube viewing it interferes with my morning music - you know I know the difference between a song and a piece
3 - 99% of the time I will not change hostile or moderate an answer
4 - 0%
5 - when I realize I made a mistake I will change it unless someone has put the right answer then I will state they are correct! 99%
6 - 50%
7 - I know one of my failings in answering is not saying enough ... in contrast I see these essays for answers and think too much information (with greatest respect) also will the questioner really understand the answer
I want to be sure no one takes offense to this comment. We all have our own personal nature which comes through in our answers.
EDIT I realized I did not answer the real question (mea culpa, mea culpa) In the grand scheme of things our reputations here are not even minutely consequential, but I do care about what the regulars think and having gotten good comments and kudos from the 2 members that I respect the most ... pretty good for a mostly self taught "classical music person"
- ?Lv 61 decade ago
About my own reputation - yes, I do care about it. I would not want to be hated by fellow classical musicians. However, sometimes I just can't be bothered to be nice when I see something I really disagree with. And then I get a bit snappy or sarcastic.
--------------
1) I hardly respond to those now, I just gave up because there's too many of them. 0.5% of the time I will respond out of annoyance, and then I don't sound very nice.
2) Maybe 10% of the time I will respond to tell them that songs are sung by a voice. Otherwise I ignore them and don't bother answering.
3) I'd say 5% of the time.
4) Hardly. Maybe 1% of the time.
5) 99.9%, unless the best answer had already been chosen.
6) Rarely. When I answer, I'll rewrite my response a few times before posting to make sure that I've given it my best shot. So I'd say almost 0%.

1. On CM have stopped bothering. In other sections it depends. For example, earlier today there was a question posted in History asking how the BBC iPlayer worked. I replied suggesting it would be better to repost elsewhere. On the same board very occasionally there are CM questions posted and I will reply suggesting they are reposted here where there are a lot of knowledgeable people.
here now 0%, elsewhere 2%
2. Again, I've stopped bothering. What's the point in hitting one's head against a brick wall! 0% (now)
3. This depends on my mood. Sometimes if I'm tired, or not in the mood generally to suffer fools gladly I will respond in an exasperated way 5%
4.Rarely! 0.5%
5. Again, rarely. Questions seem to move on with utmost rapidity that after a lapse of a day or so there seems to be little point - especially if someone has given a better answer 0.5%
6. Sometimes. I'm afraid I'm not nearly as conscientious an editor as you seem to be! Sometimes, however, I will be disturbed in the middle of composing an answer - usually by 'er indoors' - and I will do a rewrite.5%
later edit, jaded is probably the word! But this is the kind of question that does make me despair. I think I have been fairly gentle in my answer:- http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=AiCEH...
