What's new in backpacking?

It's been 25 years since my last trip. Looks like I'm going back to the high country next summer. My gear and knowledge are 25 years old (not to mention my 50 year old body!). What are the main changes I need to be aware of? What gear should be okay and what will I definitely need to upgrade?

Pretty much in the same boat as you, in my 50's, returned to backpacking after a long hiatus.

From my view, the biggest changes I believe are in the following areas: Stoves, better packs, water purifiers and water storage. If I were to suggest a single piece of equipment, I'd suggest a water filter.

Used to be we could drink from the streams, but not any longer. It's important to purify any water encountered in the backcountry.

The other new gear tech is great, but you can get by with your old stove, pack, sleeping bag, etc. Check backpacker.com as a resource of new bacpacking gear and reviews of same.

Good luck, good hikes and happy trails!

Dude, I'm over 50 and I dont trust them new fangled things at all.

the most modern piece of equipment I own is a magnesium fire starter!

Id just wander through REI and see whats out there.
