Will The Media Ever Let Anyone Be Considered Better Than Jordan?
I do feel that he's the GOAT but anytime someone mentions Kobe possibly being better at the end it turns in to WWIII. Why won't people at least open it up for discussion?
What's funny is that people will say Kobe won as a role player. Hilarious. There were actually player power rankings back then and Shaq was ranked number 1 and Kobe number 2 in the world. So, I hardly call that a role player. What's also funny is people take credit away because he won 3 with Shaq but not take credit away from Magic who won 0 without Kareem. MJ is the GOAT but Kobe is in the discussion because there has never been a player with his combination of skills combined with his killer instinct besides one other person, Jordan. No matter what Kobe does it's oh he had shaq or oh he had a great team. Keep making excuses but he will keep winning. Jordan Beware.
and Join In The Chrous, you are not seriously going to discredit an 81 point performance are you? How many players in the nba have played bad teams? All of them. How many have scored 80 points or more two of them(in the history.) That was an amazing feat.

Media definitely has a role in these debates.
Me personally, I believe MJ to be the greatest ever hands-down. However I am willing to openly discuss it in terms of maybe someone else being better. However there are not many people I'll consider it about, and Kobe is one I won't. He is a great basketball player, but I won't open it for discussion about being better than Jordan. If people wanna talk about Magic and Bill Russell, I'm more than willing to listen because I feel those two guys have a case for GOAT. I personally don't believe Kobe has. He MIGHT by the end of his career, though I doubt it, but right now no way does he have a case. What's he done?
He is an interesting case though, Kobe has kinda had two careers in one. He came along in 1996 as a role player on a team that was not long away from contending, then was the clear second best player on a three peat team led by the most dominant force in the game. In this sense his career from 1996-2004 is kinda like Scottie Pippen's career.
His second career, from 2005 and continuing into the present, is like Michael Jordan's (so far). It begins with the team struggling, then he wins scoring titles but without team success, then they get the pieces and now the team success is coming. Exactly the way MJ's career started.
This is how I see Kobe as having had two careers in one, this second one (still in progress) being similar to MJ's.
This kinda detracted from the question. If Kobe retired today, he'd be about #11 on my all-time list. For some reason some people feel he's done enough to be #2 (and some crackheads even place him at #1), which I don't get. My top three is MJ, Magic, Russell. Kobe might have done enough by his career's end to break into the top three, but right now? No way. Those guys all achieved way more individually as with their teams than Kobe has.
Source(s): and no-one talk to me about "81 points"! anyone that wants to define a player's greatness by what he did in regular season games against bottom feeder teams in February, you go right ahead. I guess 'cause the Spurs (v the CLIPPERS) on the last (and meaningless) game of the season all fed Robinson the ball 'til he scored 71 to win the scoring title (and beat MJ's career-high), then he's better than MJ too? please. - Killa GLv 41 decade ago
The media has been ready, even before Jordan retired.
In 1996 it was Penny Hardaway, in 1997 it was Grant Hill, in 1998 it was Kobe Bryant, then Lebron, and before the start of the 2008 Finals Kobe was really, REALLY being compared to Jordan. But none of them stacked up over the long haul and Kobe under performed in the NBA finals.
Trust me, if the Lakers put together a couple of championships, or Lebron starts to win rings the the surpassing MJ rumblings will begin again.

Jordan was considered the greatest of all time because of how he changed the game. He raised it to a different level and made it what it is today. He provided something that doesnt reflect on the box score. kobe is a great player. probably one of the greatest, but he's far from being the next jordan. Kobe, and all the other great players in the NBA today are just following jordan's footsteps.
Maybe someday, someone will surpass MJ as GOAT, but i dont think i will be alive to see that one person play.

Michael jordan is the greates of all time. No question asked. Kobe has 3 championships where he was the secondary guy. 1 as the main guy. 1 MVP. MJ had 6 titles as the leader of the team. He won MVP numerous times.

Maybe some day when someone actually IS better then MJ. Yeah but we should be able to compare him and others more. For example kareem abdul jabbar was much better downlow of course.

Never ever. He was a different breed of athlete- extreme work ethic, great physical skill, and a heart like a pitbull.

Ah, maybe. Who knows?
But if you are trying to say Kobe is the GOAT, that's ridiculous. If you are covertly asking why the media doesn't give him such props, its because he doesn't deserve them.
Kobe is not even top 5. (Sorry Fakers fans!) Now let's see how many of the LA sheeple give me a thumbs down on this comment lol

not until someone similar to his style, has to be guard, and gets more championships, and MVP's than him.
