Heart murmour in our cocker spaniel pup.?

We have a 9 week old cocker and she appears to have a slight heart murmour, the vet will sound her again when she gets her second jag. And has said that because it is so slight, there is a chance it will be closing up.

We were hoping to have her litter, after a couple of seasons, with this heart condition do you think this is advisable?

most murmurs clear up on their own..my large pom when i got het at 5 weeks old the vet said she had one...at 24 weeks it was gone..she's had 2 litters and will be having a 3rd in the spring...none of her pups she's had showed any sign of it..just have your vet watch her close...

At 9 weeks it is WAY too soon to be thinking about taking a litter from her at some time in the future. There are so many things to consider between now and when she is fully mature, quite apart from the heart murmur, which may indeed clear itself, as she develops. Hopefully you had her on a 'non breeding endorsement' which would be some indication that she came from a good breeder, one who cares about her bloodline, and the breed and is therefore of show and breeding quality, to start with. This breeder is the one you should get together with as far as whether she is, as an adult, of good enough standard to breed from. And at that stage, you get her heart checked by a vet! Obviously her heart has to be sound, not the least in case she should need an emergency C.Section (general anaesthetic). This should not be done before she is 2 years.

Meanwhile, at 9 weeks, you have a long time before you make any decisions like this - so enjoy your puppy.

some puppies grow out of a heart murmur and some live with them for the rest of their lives. i don't think it would be a good idea to breed her as they may be hereditary, and some heart murmurs can be life threatening. i wouldnt want to see puppies having bad heart problems if it could have been avoided.

This is a question you need to ask you vet as if it is a generic problem she could pass on to her puppes then no. Also it may not be safe for her to have puppies.
