Why do so many people think that Wainwright deserves the CY over Carpenter?

I just don't get it. Do people really think that having more wins makes him a better pitcher? Wainwright has more Ks and more wins, and *that's about it*

Look at the numbers:

ERA

Carpenter: 2.30

Wainwright: 2.58

WHIP

Carpenter: 1.01

Wainwright: 1.21

Opponent Batting Average

Carpenter: .272

Wainwright: .297

Walks

Carpenter: 37

Wainwright: 64

Complete Games

Carpenter: 3

Wainwright: 1

Carpenter is better than Wainwright in almost every statistic, despite having been injured at the start of the season. He also beats him in stolen bases allowed, HRs allowed, total bases allowed (by almost 100!), shutouts, and wild pitches.

Is there something I'm missing, here?

Update:

Agree with you about the Ks, Utley, I feel the same way. Nevertheless, Carpenter's stats as a whole are clearly superior.

Update 2:

Padres 2011: As of right now, MLB.com says my OBA numbers are correct.

People put WAY too much emphasis on wins. Wins really don't indicate much, it's all about run support (unless, of course, you're giving up 6 runs every game).

K's definitely are something to consider, though, because of the luck factor. A lot of times, the pitcher makes his pitch and has absolutely no control over what happens. It could be the best pitch in the world, but the hitter hits it where it's pitched and it's a nice piece of hitting. With a strikeout, there is NO chance for that to happen.

I think Carpenter is better, but not by much.

  • You're missing absolutely nothing.

some people just get blinded by wins-losses... I mean that's my least favorite stat in baseball right there.. because you could pitch amazing nad still have a terrible record thanks to bad run support(COUGHcliff lee while on the Indians, zack GreinkeCOUGH)
