Lost IP address on PC?

I recently lost internet connection on my PC during a storm. The router is fine and so is my laptop. When I try to connect on the PC it tells me it is searching for the IP address, then says it can't find it. I have rolled back the system to a date prior to the storm but this hasn't helped. If anyone could help I'd be grateful, but please explain in fairly basic terms, I'm not a technophobe but neither am I a computer programmer. I am using Windows XP, with an external router.

Update:

Thanks for that I have two options on the control anel one is Internet options and the other is Network connections. My router is not wireless, but does provide wifi for my latop which is working fine and has the same IP address

I would make a phone call to my ISP if that happened to me.

It probably didn't lose it but instead not have one completely. If your router is wireless that also might be a problem.

Try assigning your computer an IP address.

    Control Panel

    Network and Internet Connections

    Internet Options

Right click both of the connections that appear

    Click properties

    Click TCP/IP protocol

Click properties again on TCP/IP protocol

Make sure nothing weird is typed in the gray little boxes

Click "OK" on assign me an IP address.

That's how I fixed mines when I couldn't find an IP address. You can also try repairing both by right clicking "Repair"

I hope this helps you. I am not a technophobe either. And I can barely configure Windows XP internet which is supposed to be easier than all other OS.

This sounds more like the problem is caused by you internet service provider. Most likely the storm knocked out some of the local telephone infrastructure. It may even be that the ISP randomly disconnected you for no reason (this happened to me before). Definitely phone them up and check first to ensure that you are still supposed to be receiving internet.
