In "Battlestar Galactica", why does Dr. Baltar have a British accent?

It's just something I find amusing...

These people don't live on Earth. There is no Britain. There should be no British accents.

It's obviously, to me at least, a way to make him sound more sophisticated and intelligent.

Maybe he's from a different tribe?

I suppose you have to be sophisticated and intelligent to lead to the (almost) destruction of your people... live with someone in your head talking about it... and somehow not have anyone quite figure it out.

I somehow liked the original Baltar better. Nice neat motivated by greed enemy that you can see that's motivated by greed.

Wow Ty, not only are you cute, but you watch Battlestar Galactica. I am impressed.

To answer your question - I am not sure if you watched the whole series. They have a prequel story which explains that Dr. Baltar invented the accent because he was ashamed that he came from a farm and was ashamed of his heritage. Still it is kind of funny that the accent turns out to be English. It think it brings out more of mystery in his character. Battlestar the new series ranks as one of the 3 best shows I ever watched. Lost being No.1 of course.
