how did yahoo help to create alibaba.com and why did they do it?

would it be possible for yahoo to do the same thing with another country? And are mergers normally good or bad for companies? Does it create or cut jobs?

Update:

is the yahoo-microsoft merger going to be generally good or bad for the employees and the companies?

Not sure about why they did it or if they could do it again (I mean, yes they could, but I'm not sure they are in a strong enough position to do so).

Mergers are good for companies in general, partly because they are adding more revenue. However, they make the extra bottom-line profits by cutting employees (i.e. some employees are made redundant).

So, generally good for the bigger company - generally bad for some of the employees of the smaller company.
