My beagle is randomly breathing very heavily from his nose. It's only when he exhales, and it isn't constant.?

I have a 9-year-old beagle (but I don't think the ages matters because he's done this for a long time) and he weighs about 45lbs. For as long as I can remember, he has just had these random moments every once-in-a-while where he will start to exhale through his nose really heavily. It's kind of like the same noise he makes when he is about to puke except for he isn't swallowing heavily. It's always scared me when he does it, but it seems to fade within a few minutes (kind of like when a human gets hiccups). I noticed him doing this last night, and I just heard him do it again. Does anyone know what this is or why it happens?

It's a slight defect in the beagle breed believe it or not.  Most pedigree dogs have one or two problems and this is the beagles.  e.g.  German Sheppard's and Lab's have hip dislocation problems, Pugs have breathing problems, beagles have soft pallet problems.  Some call it "backward - hiccups".  It's a problem with there soft pallet.  Although it's suppose to be harmless, it can be distressing for the owner.  I have 4 beagles and freaked out when it first happen.  What you can do when it happens is put your hand over your dogs nose and mouth to make them hold their breath (for about 10-15 sec's).  While doing this, take your other hand and stroke under their mouth.

The reason you are making them hold their breath (it's like you holding your breath when you get the hiccups.  You want to stoke their soft pallet (under their mouth) at the same time because that's where their soft pallet is and stroking it can help calm/stop the spasm.
