Yeah newer versions of the PS3 don't have backwards compatibility with PS2 games, but if you got a PS3 from a specific time frame all you have to do is go onto the playstation store and download the PS2 system data i'm not sure exactly when this time frame of PS3 models was so I'm not positive it will work for you but it's worth a try.

The 20 and 80 gb PS3 can also play PS2 games. The 60 gb costs as much as the 80 gb, not the 40 gb. The 40 gb is 100 bucks cheaper than the 60 gb. The reason that Sony introduced the 40 gb is two reasons, but it's mainly 1. Sony likes to put a positive spin on things. Anyway, the reason Sony said it introduced the 40 gb is because there's going to be a lot of PS3 games, so gamers aren't going to have time to play PS2 games. The real reason is that not a lot of people are willing to spend 500 bucks on a system that doesn't have a whole lot of games, and Blu-ray and HD-DVD was still fighting it out. By not including either the emotion engine or the PS2's GPU, Sony saved over 100 bucks, so it can pass the savings to the gamers.

No current PS3 model will play PS2 games ! Sony removed that feature after 2007 !
The only PS3 models that will play PS2 games were the 20GB and 60GB 2006 launch models and then in 2007 there was a 80GB model that would play PS2 games but since then all PS3 models made after 2007 cannot play PS2 games !

First of all, we have a LOT of wrong answers here. There is more than 1 backwards compatible model, and the "PS2 system data" on the PlayStation Store does not make your system backwards compatible. First, let me summarize the compatibility.
------------
ALL PS3s will play PS1 games. Make sure you check your PS1 game for compatibility here, as some PS1 games have some issues playing on the PS3. Just choose either model because all PS3s have the same PS1 software emulation.

All PS3s that could play PS2 games are no longer in production.
The 20 and 60GB (NTSC) will play about 97% of PS2 games properly. It does NOT have FULL compatibility like a lot of people say. A few games will have issues playing. Go here for compatibility support.*
http://www.us.playstation.com/Support/CompatibleSt...
The FIRST gen 80GB (from Metal Gear Solid 4 and Motorstorm bundles) and 60GB (PAL) have reduced PS2 compatibility. Again, go here for compatibility support.*
http://www.us.playstation.com/Support/CompatibleSt...
The 40GB, SECOND gen 80GB, 160GB, and PS3 slim will not play ANY PS2 games. There is no way to make them PS2 compatible.**
It has been confirmed by Sony that PS2 compatibility will not return to any future PS3 consoles.
http://www.joystiq.com/2009/08/20/sony-ps2-back-co...
The PS2 software you see on the PlayStation Store does not make your PS3 backwards compatible if it isn’t already. It is used to emulate the fat PS2 HDD that was used for certain PS2 games, so this software is for backwards compatible models only.
* - If your PS3 has 4 USB ports, it is backwards compatible with PS2 games. But you have to know what GB model you have in order to tell if it has near-full compatibility or if it has reduced compatibility.
** - If your PS3 has only 2 USB ports, it will not play any PS2 games at all.
-----------
Again, if your PS3 isn't compatible with PS2 games, there is nothing you can do to make it compatible with them. You will just have to buy a backwards compatible model or buy a cheap PS2 (recommended).

Actually, There's 3 playstation 3 systems that are backwards compatible.
(1) 20gb PS3 released in November 2006
(2) 60gb PS3 released in November 2006
and
(3) The only 80gb PS3 released in November 2006. The 80gb PS3 model number is as follows: Model CECHE01
Now, if you've got a PS3 and its an 80gb PS3 with those numbers, then you have a backwards compatible PS3. Unfortunately, in December of 2007, Sony recalled all backwards compatible PS3's. So, if you have a PS3 20gb, 60gb or 80gb (but only with that model number) that was released in between November 2006 and December 2007, then you'll have a PS3 that's backwards compatible. Now, there were some answers that said PS3 released a patch for the backwards compatible systems, unfortunately this is incorrect. What they did is they updated the firmware for the systems that came pre-backwards compitable because there were large bugs in the firmware for those systems. I hope this answers your questions. If you'd like further information, please refer to the sources section.
Source(s): First source was personal experience. A Sony regional manager came into the Best Buy store I worked at and told us why we had to take them off the shelves. The second source follows: http://www.us.playstation.com/Support/CompatibleSt... And is also a generator to help find PS2 games that'll work on PS3 systems. The third source is http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PS3 - Anonymous1 decade ago
Well too bad, the PS3 80GB that you got cannot play PS2 games.
When you buy a PS3, you don't just go out and buy it. It's not like when you go for milk. You have to learn about it, and more importantly, learn about the specific model you're getting. You should have known it can't play PS2 games.

The time frame that you should have got it in to be able to play ps2 games is 2007-early 2008
Only the 60gb ps3 can play ps2 games.
But there are two versions of 80gb ps3 there are the ones that can play ps2 games and ones that cant.

if it couldn't play ps2 games then the ps3 is probably from another country and doesn't read the ps2 games ''format'' since it's U.S. format and it's not compatible with the other country's format . ex : if you ordered a ps3 online and it's from let's say japan , then you can't play ps2 games but you can play ps3 games on it though .
I hav a 40gb white ps3 and it only plays ps3 games but can't play ps2 games .

Certain models of the PS3 are backwards compatible with your PS2 game discs. Unfortunately, as you have already purchased one that isnt backwards compatible, you'll have to repurchase your PS2 game on the PSNetwork.
For reference, I believe the original release 160 gig PS3 model is the only backwards compatible one. And according to their website, absolutely none of their current models are backwards compatible.

that's funny because my ps2 games work on PS3 perfectly (i bought my ps3 in 2007 so maybe that's the problem) or maybe the disc is dirty, try wiping it and putting it back in.
