If the box feels soft to the touch (if you can move it with any pressure), if the shank is broken, or if you can feel your toes on the floor when you dance (what I mean by that is if it feels like you're not even wearing shoes). Basically, if they hurt to put on and you've never had a problem with them before they're probably dead. Shoes only last for about 50 or so hours, so that works out to about 8 months to a years worth of class. Dancing in dead shoes is dangerous, when in doubt get a new pair. If you had to ask this they're probably dead.

Your shoes are dead if the box is soft or squishy anywhere (sides or top) and/or if the shank is too soft to support you.

The fabric on the outside has NOTHING to do with the strength of the shoe, that's purely aesthetic. And you should be able to feel the floor through your shoes all the time, if you can't, you've got too much padding or your shoes are fitted incorrectly.

Your teacher should be watching your shoes to let you know when you are ready for a new pair. Especially if you are new at this, you can't be expected to know, so its really up to them. If you're not sure, ask!

And yes, pointe shoes should last most of the school year for a new beginner, but if your feet are not super strong, you may not even have them broken in by the end of the year (though you probably shouldn't have been put on pointe if that is the case). Again, ask your teacher, that's always the best bet!

As long as the box is not showing, the fabric is not badly worn or the box is warped then it should be fine
